Continuing Without A
Clue
Authors Note: This is a piece I wrote about predicting and the reasoning behind it including a different story
Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen is about a young boy names
Samuel in the time frame of the Revolutionary war, who has a very keen sense for nature and is
very good at hunting. One day, while out hunting, he sees fire coming from his
village immediately runs back to look for his parents. He ends up finding his whole village on fire
and many dead people. He sets on a quest in search of his parents knowing they
were still alive. I believe that he will eventually find his parents but will
go through many difficult obstacles like encountering other troops of British
Soldiers.
The first reason I believe this is because throughout the
book they have been hinting and hinting about the fact that he is very god at
survival and men’s work. For example, the narrator always points out that he is
always chopping wood for fire and house appliances and when hunting, he can
identify what animal is around by the crack of a stick. Pointing out all these
strong traits in the beginning of the book is foreshadowing what is going to
happen later on in his journey. It is as if god has been preparing him for a
moment like this. Usually any fictional character with strong traits like this
ends up successful.
Another reason why I think that he will end up finding his
parents is because he always has sheer determination and belief that he will
find his beloved ones. Even at toughest times he keeps moving forward. When he
found a possible place where his parents might be, he got tomahawked in the
head and nearby soldiers found him an cared for him until he could walk. Once
he could walk he decided to leave the safety of the group he was with and
venture ahead to speed up the progress of finding his parents, even if that
meant further damage to his wound. His will is a big clue in predicting he will
find his parents because in order to accomplish anything big you need will,
which leads me to my next paragraph.
This story really connects with the book The Hunger Games because they both deal
with survival. The Hunger Games is
about 12 Districts and each year they draft a boy and a girl from each district
to fight till death. Katnis was drafted
and she herself had determination and hunting skills. They are put in any
environment and have to survive while it’s every man for himself just like
Samuel did when he was traveling by himself out in the woods. In The Hunger
games, with the survival skills Katnis had, she made it to the end and won
because of the big traits that she and Samuel have in common.
Samuel will be victorious in the end. He doesn’t care how
difficult to how long it will take, because he is not stopping until he is
dead. He has a fly or die instinct which will take any person so far in life.
Also, paying attention to all the other stories who have the same theme of
determination, you can tell that Samuel will be successful.
